Season 2009/ 2010 Match Reports

Wootton Bassett (Home - 6th September 2009). Started the game quite solid with Highworth doing all the pressing. After 15 minutes EVANS headed in from a nice BERRY corner 1-0. The game continued much the same with DALE and CASS having solid debuts. Then after 25 minutes from another corner TYLER made it 2-0. At this point there was only one team in it. A couple of minutes before half time MILLER had to make his first save. HALF TIME 2-0. Almost straight from the restart SIMPSON hit the bar. 10 minutes later SIMPSON rifled in from 20 yards after good work from BERRY and FEDAI 3-0. But within 10 minutes BASSETT pulled one back 3-1. With about 5 minutes left BERRY went around the keeper only to be bought down, the referee pointed to the spot PENALTY!! Only to change his decision to offside ?
FINAL SCORE 3-1
GOOD START TO SEASON , I FEEL WE COULD HAVE WON BY MORE LETS KEEP IT GOING NOW .......

Croft FC (Away  - 13th September 2009) Highworth started brightly with DALE spraying the ball around well. After a couple of near misses EVANS headed in from a corner 1-0. With Highworth having all the play it was no surprise when BERRY made it 2-0 from close range. Shortly after SLINN scored from a cross-shot 3-0. 5 minutes before half time FEDAI was sent through, he smartly chipped the keeper to make it 4-0. Half time 4-0. Second half was really scrappy with Highworth creating a few chances with no reward. DALE rattled the cross bar with a good free kick, but all the good football had gone from the game. 10 minutes from time CROFT made it 4-1. That was about it FINAL SCORE 4-1
GOOD FIRST HALF BUT GOT DRAGGED INTO A BIT OF A SCRAP IN THE SECOND MUST LEARN TO COMPETE BUT KEEP OUR HEADS AND CONTINUE TO PLAY FOOTBALL

Old Town (Home - 20th September 2009 - Cup Game) From the off a very scrappy game where anything attack wise was from HIGHWORTH. After 15 minutes it was 1-0 SLINN scored from FEDAI'S cross. This score line stayed the same despite a lot of huffing and puffing without a lot of quality. HALF TIME 1-0. The second half was much the same until EVANS scored twice within 5 minutes 3-0. With 15 minutes left BERRY made it 4-0 then within 5 minutes TYLER added the fifth. FINAL SCORE 5-0
A WINS A WIN THEY SAY , BUT AFTER ALL THE PASS AND MOVE TRAINING WE'D DONE THIS THIS IS NOT QUITE WHAT I EXPECTED, [ GOOD JOB MARIO DIDNT WATCH]

WROUGHTON (Away - 27th September 2009)  In a very tight first 20 minutes neither side created much then DALE made it 1-0 after following up his shot. The game continued the same. At hlf time we went in 1-0 up. Just after half time WROUGHTON made it 1-1, the second half was a different matter with WROUGHTON making most of the running. With the game going into stoppage time HIGHWORTH thought they had scored but the referee said it had not crossed the line. Damn it WROUGHTON only went and scored 1-2 and again within a minute 1-3. To concede two goals in injury time is quite cruel. FINAL SCORE 1-3
A TOUGH BATTLE , AND LOST IT RIGHT AT THE END, I THINK MAYBE IF I HAD CHANGED THE LINE UP JUST A LITTLE THEN MAYBE WE COULD HAVE HUNG ON , BUT HINDSIGHT A GREAT THING.......

Liden FC (Away - 4th October 2009) Started on top but were restricted to long range efforts. The game became scrappy then DALE fired in after a long throw 1-0. Despite having the better of the game at half time it was still 1-0. The second half continued the same with DALE, SLINN, BERRY and EVANS going close. Then EVANS made it 2-0. With LIDENS only shot of the game MILLER saved a penalty. HIGHWORTH pressed again and EVANS headed in from a corner, despite going close on a number off occasions the score finished 3-0
TOTALLY ONE SIDED MATCH WITH MORE LUCK COULD AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN SIX OR SEVEN, GOOD TO BE BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Tetbury (Home - 11th October 2009 - Cup Game) As expected against a lower league opposition it was one way traffic. DALE scored twice to put Highworth 2-0. Soon after BERRY made it 3-0, this is how it stayed until half time. The second half was the same with CATON and GARRETT making it 4-0. BERRY made 5-0 ,with TYLER scoring the sixth, 6-0.  EVANS added number 7, KINSEY scored number 8.  Final score FULL TIME 8-0
A EASY VICTORY WHICH WAS TO BE EXPECTED, PLAYED IN VERY WET CONDITIONS AT TIMES SOME GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYED

STRATTON YTH (Home - 15th November 2009) Typical game when you have'nt played for a month, really rusty and flat. Started out on top, after 15 minutes CLIFTON got onto a smart SIMPSON through ball to make it 1-0. Other than hitting the upright and a couple of long range efforts that was about it in the first half. The second half was mostly Stratton but they did’nt at any point trouble MILLER. CLIFTON got his second on his debut to make it 2-0. Final score 2-0
GOOD WIN AFTER A MONTH OUT VERY RUSTY WILL NEED TO UP THE WORK RATE NEXT WEEK..........WICKHAM AWAY

Highworth J (Away - 6th December 2009) Cup Match.  Local derby cup game. Was quite tight for the first 15 minutes with 'H' doing all the attacking. DALE made it 1-0, and soon after DALE fired home to make it 2-0. After a great run from DALE his shot was slid home by BERRY 3-0. This is how it stayed until half time. The second half was almost the same as the first with 'H' doing most of the attacking with only a couple of long range efforts which MILLER dealt with easily. DALE added another two goals to make it 5-0. SIMPSON , SLINN , BERRY and EVANS went close before CATON-GARRETT made it 6-0 with a effort that was going to hit the corner flag until it was deflected in. In the last minute 'J' got a consolation goal final score 6-1. CONSIDERING WE HAD NOT PLAYED FOR WEEKS NOT A BAD PERFORMANCE HOPEFULLY WE CAN BUILD ON THIS

Wootton Bassett (Away - 13th December 2009) Started slowly with Bassett making all the running, so it was no surprise when they went ahead 0-1. Highworth slowly made their way into the game. 10 minutes from half time SLINN volleyed in 1-1. HALF TIME 1-1. The first 15 minutes in the second half was all Highworth with EVANS hitting the bar, BERRY forcing a save and some good long range efforts from DALE. Bassett took over and only some good keeping from MILLER and a goal-line clearance from BRAZIER kept us in the game FINAL SCORE 1-1
A SIGH OF RELIEF , WE WERE LUCKY TODAY , WE UNDERPERFORMED AND UNDERESTIMATED OUR OPPONENTS , ILLNESS AND A COUPLE OF LADS CARRYING KNOCKS DIDNT HELP BUT WE NEED TO IMPROVE ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Liden (Home - 15th January 2010) A tight first 15 minutes with Highworth having the better of the exchanges. After a loose clearance THAPA made it 1-0. Liden made it 1-1 almost straight away, 5 minutes on an own goal made it 2-1. THAPA got his second 3-1. Half time 3-1. The second half was more open with Liden battling hard and pulling two goals back to make it 3-3. But Highworth stepped up a gear with THAPA chipping in to make it 4-3 ( debut hat-trick) and  EVANS heading in 5-3. That was to be the last goal in this exciting match final score 5-3
GOOD TO WATCH UNLESS YOUR A MANAGER , BUT AFTER THROWING AWAY A TWO GOAL LEAD SHOWED GOOD CHARACTER TO WIN BY TWO, AND A NICE DEBUT HAT-TRICK BY MABICK... WELCOME TO MABICK AND HIS DAD

Pewsham (Away - 7th Fedruary 2010) In a very scrappy first half Highworth were on top with EVANS hitting the bar. BERRY, THAPA, SLINN and CATON -GARRETT all going close. With 10 minutes left of the first half BERRY made it 1-0 from close in. HALF TIME 1-0 The second half  Highworth were camped in the Pewsham half with over 10 corners and numerous chances missed before THAPA made it 2-0. Despite even more chances the final score was 2-0.  COULD HAVE BEEN A LANDSLIDE WITH BETTER FINISHING BUT STILL A GOOD WIN

Wickham (Home - 21st February 2010) Cup Match. A very tight opening with neither side creating much. DALE broke through the middle to make it 1-0, it stayed like that until half time thanks to a couple of good saves by MILLER. Wickham came out in the second half flying as I expected, within 10 minutes it was 1-1 when a cross went straight in. They then went into the lead from a corner 1-2. We missed a penalty hitting the bar. Wickham increased their lead to 1-3 before DALE shot just wide. Wickham then rubbed salt in the wounds adding a fourth from another corner final score 1-4. GAME TIGHTER THAN THE SCORELINE BUT NEED TO DEFEND CORNERS BETTER WE HAVE A BIG ENOUGH SIDE TO DO THIS SO LETS TRY AND LEARN FROM THIS

Stratton Youth (Away - 7th March 2010) Not my normal report as the final score was a 2-0 defeat in a game which was refereed by Stratton’s coach. Also it was noticed that instead of supporting THE TEAM people seemed to just moan about other people’s children. I for one do not like this and want no part of it. I will continue to try and get the best out of the boys and hope they can produce the goods to silence their critics.

Wickham FC (Away - 14th March 2010) The first half was totally dominated by highworth. DALE hit the bar (did it land over the line) a lot of people say yes. THAPA went close a couple of times. THAPA did make it 1-0, despite lots of pressure from Highworth half time it remained 1-0
The second half started with the expected home pressure after 20 minutes they made it 1-1 because MILLER had two swollen hands and was unable to hold the shot. Then it went to 1-2, with this MILLER in obvious pain was taken off to be replaced by BRAZIER( fair play Tom). Highworth hit the woodwork twice more and ended up with EVANS in goal ( God help us ). Wickham added two more the final score was 4-1.
DAYLIGHT ROBBERY AN UNTRUE SCORE LINE , THE BOYS PLAYED REALLY WELL HAD SO MANY PRAISES FROM THE OPPOSITION COACHES AND MANAGER , BUT WITH SOME OF OUR BOYS IN KEY POSITIONS INJURED IT WAS A BIG ASK, BUT A BIG WELL DONE FROM ME

Pewsham FC (Home - 28th March 2010) Started off brightly with DALE shooting from long range, in fact the first half was more or less one way traffic, with DALE, THAPA, BERRY and DALE again going close. Then 10 minutes from half time CATTON-GARRETT made it 1-0 from a corner. Half time 1-0. Soon after half time THAPA sat the keeper down as he rounded him to make it 2-0. After two good long range efforts from BERRY, THAPA set up DALE to rifle in 3-0. The game was over as a contest. PEWSHAM battled on with MILLER saving three long range efforts. Final score was 3-0. QUITE A SOLID PERFORMANCE AND WITH WICKHAM DROPPING POINTS WHO KNOWS 2ND PLACE MAY WELL STILL BE ON

Ferndale FC (Home - 11th April 2010) Our opponents started brightly putting us under pressure, but slowly we got into the game with CLIFTON and THAPA having chances. After 20 minutes from nowhere DALE scored with a left foot screamer 1-0. Soon after BRAZIER made it 2-0 with a scorching drive( well sort of ).  It was nearly all HIGHWORTH now and soon after EVANS made it 3-0. Despite more chances HALF TIME 3-0. Second half contained some nice football from HIGHWORTH with THAPA ,CLIFTON, BERRY, EVANS , DALE, all going close. From another corner DALE made it 4-0. FERNDALE pulled one back but that was only because we became a bit lazy. SLINN produced a good turn and shot and BERRYS header was saved from a fine DALE ball that was about that. FINAL SCORE 4-1. GOOD WIN WITH SOME GOOD FOOTBALL AT TIMES, WE WONT BE ABLE TO BE LAZY AT TIMES NEXT WEEK v WROUGHTON , DONT GET CASUAL LADS ............

Wroughton (Home - 18th April 2010) What a game after 3 minutes SIMPSON sent a good free kick into the box EVANS ran in to head home 1-0. WROUGHTON quickly tried to get back in to the game with a couple of long range free kicks.  Soon after DALE was booked after a dust up, the game was getting heated and highly competitive. Both sides battling hard but neither giving an inch HALF TIME 1-0. SECOND HALF again 100 percent effort from both teams. After a slight mistake WROUGHTON made it 1-1. CATON- GARRETT was red carded for swearing ( a little too loud) leaving us with 10 men against the league leaders. Then after a foul ( I mean a dive, even the striker was laughing ). WROUGHTON made it 2-1 from the penalty spot. HIGHWORTH never stopped battling and with about 10 minutes left a cross went in and BERRY got to the ball before the keeper to score from about 3 yards 2-2. Despite WROUGHTON’S best efforts they could not break down the spirited HIGHWORTH. FINAL SCORE 2-2. FIRST POINTS WROUGHTON HAVE DROPPED ALL SEASON. SAYS IT ALL....... BAGS OF EFFORT....20 MINUTES WITH ONE LESS PLAYER......ALL 13 PLAYERS DESERVE CREDIT

Croft (Home - 22nd April 2010) Very strange game with the first half ending 0-0 despite HIGHWORTH creating numerous chances and CROFT defending well. The second half was a different story, within 5 minutes THAPA made it 1-0. Soon after CLIFTON made it 2-0, rom a corner CATON-GARRETT headed in 3-0, THAPA with a nice finish 4-0, THAPA set up CLIFTON to make it 5-0, THAPA got his (HAT-TRICK) 6-0 and then set up CLIFTON 7-0(for his HAT-TRICK) with this THAPA was withdrawn with about 8 minutes left ( basically he had scored three and set up three in 27 minutes ) no wonder he wanted a rest. In the last minute CATON-GARRETT juggled the ball on the edge of the box turned and volleyed in 8-0 (did my eyes deceive me)? final score 8-0. AFTER QUITE A SUBDUED FIRST HALF WHICH REMINDED ME OF A PRE SEASON, WE BLEW AWAY CROFT AND THEY ARE NO MUGS. EVEN ALLOWED ME TO SAY TO THEIR MANAGER (SID) JOKINGLY {YOUR HALF TIME TEAM TALK MUST HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTE RUBBISH } WELL DONE....................

Wickham (Home - 29th April 2010) Not since the STRATTON YOUTH away game have I struggled to describe a game, lackluster, preseason friendly, Oh no second place was up for grabs, it did not seem that way. A non event of a first half finished with WICKHAM leading 1-0. Followed by a even worse second half where a free header from a corner made it 2-0. A good finish made it 3-0, HIGHWORTH did not turn up ,the lone striker THAPA again worked tirelessly, SIMPSON as normal top class and MILLER in goal no faults again. But where was everyone else, at Swindon and Chippenham trials on Saturday. FINAL SCORE 0-3. I GIVE CREDIT WHEN ITS DUE .....BUT MY GOD YOU LET YOUR SELFS DOWN ......IF I’m any thing to do with this team next season that sort of performance is not acceptable.......

Ferndale (Away - 2nd May 2010) Game called off leaving us with 3 points
THIS LEAVES US FINISHING THIRD WITH 32 POINTS OUR HIGHEST FINISH WELL DONE BOYS..........
I WOULD JUST LIKE TO ADD A COUPLE OF THINGS I WAS ASKED ''ARE YOU SIGNING HALF OF THE LIDEN TEAM'' NOW BEARING IN MIND WE FINISHED WITH 32 POINTS AND LIDEN WITH 16 MY MATHS TELLS ME WE ARE TWICE AS GOOD, SO THE ANSWERS NO. I HAVE BEEN ASKED BY 2 BOYS WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF SIGNING, I HAVE NOT ASKED ANYONE MYSELF. LASTLY HAVE BEEN ASKED WHY I WANTED SHIRTS RETURNED THIS IS PURELY IF ANYONE DOES LEAVE I HAVE NOT GOT TO CHASE ROUND SWINDON AFTER THEM ...
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUPPORT DURING THE SEASON
